 Review writing tips and advice

There is no escaping the fact that this wonderful thing that we call the ‘world wide web’ is made up of review, after review, after review. If we removed them all from cyber space we could be looking at www.lotsofspace! Some may say that they are an integral piece of this well oiled machine.

They are the life blood of so many eCommerce businesses because if you take away the product review the product remains unsold or take away the movie review, the seats remain empty.

To the unsure or the unconvinced you may not realize how much of an impact a review has on your life. Whether you shop at Amazon, eBay or even your local High Street, a review will have a certain impact on your life. The mere wording of any type of review can mean success or failure for someone or something.

What is a review?

We could say that it is an honest, reliable evaluation of an event or thing. Maybe it could be described as the ultimate critique or simply an evaluation that a consumer would use to help them make a decision into making a purchase of a service or product.

 Words v Pictures

As the saying goes ‘a picture speaks a thousand words’. That statement has never been truer but if the correct words are used then you shouldn’t need any kind of image.

The words you choose should paint the picture (we will cover the use of photographs in a later post). How uninformed and deflated would you be the next time you purchase an iPad for example, if all you were given was the picture? Not a single word. I believe that you would probably walk away empty handed.

We humans, by nature, are more inquisitive. We have to have all of the information. All of the technical data has to be at hand. With any kind of acquisition it is always the review that sways our purchase. Most of us will be searching deep for the pro’s and cons, trying to pick out the golden nugget that will clinch the deal.

Our probing will hopefully unearth the facts we crave. Amongst all of the techno geeky facts and figures will be the review. This will be the section that gives us the real facts from a real person. It will inform us of all of the plus points and forewarn us of the negative ones.

It will be that very same review that will make our final decision. Our trust is placed entirely with a total stranger but somehow we will now rely on his or her words entirely.

 Reviews are powerful.

But it isn’t just words. There is an art to writing a great review, whether it’s for the latest gadget or a must see movie.
